Re/Imagining Critique
About the Faculty Summer Institute
Critique, historically described as the process of presenting and reviewing work for feedback, has longserved as a foundational pedagogical practice in art and design education. At RISD, we refer to our “culture of critique.” But how is critique at RISD really defined? How do we define critique within acommunity as diverse as ours? What various forms of critique, dialogue and feedback emerge in ourclassrooms? In what ways does this culture intersect with our inclusive teaching methods? What are the pitfalls, challenges and opportunities for critique to evolve? How has the practice of critique evolved over the past decades? During this Faculty Summer Institute, Re-Imagining Critique, we will collaboratively examine these prescient questions.
Outcomes
Through a series of presentations, conversations, discussions, workshops, and prompts, we will collectively develop toolkits and resources to clarify the meaning of critique in our classrooms, enhance our inclusive teaching, and foster environments conducive to student-centered collective learning.
